About MAM

MAM is a perinatal center focused on holistic care for individuals during the prenatal, birth, and postpartum stages. We provide everything needed for an out-of-hospital birth assisted by midwives. For those who prefer a hospital birth but still want prenatal and postpartum care from midwives, MAM offers collaborative care options, allowing you to labor at our center or at home before arriving at the hospital in active labor. All of our packages include prenatal care, childbirth education classes, labor support, and postpartum and lactation care.

MAM is located at 1390 Av. San Ignacio, San Juan, 00921.

MAM offers virtual collaborative care, childbirth education classes, virtual doula services, and postpartum and lactation support.

You can reach MAM via email at centromampr@gmail.com or by phone at 787-945-5000.

Yes, MAM offers several payment packages and methods based on a sliding scale.

Perinatal Care

Midwives and Obstetricians (OB) both play important roles in perinatal care, but they have different training and approaches. Midwives specialize in childbirth, focusing on natural, low-risk pregnancies and emphasizing holistic care with minimal interventions. OB’s are trained to manage medical complications and high-risk pregnancies, skilled in medical interventions and clinical procedures.

OB’s provide referrals for medical procedures such as sonograms and lab work, and they manage MAM participants if they are deemed high-risk and require more intensive care.

You will have prenatal appointments with both the midwives and the OB at MAM.

You will deliver at your preferred location. If you are interested in labor support services, you will deliver at the hospital of your choice.

You will be accompanied by a midwife, a midwife assistant/nurse, a student midwife and any individuals you choose to have with you during the process.

Every case is evaluated individually. You will find out if your pregnancy is low-risk after your first appointment with the midwives.

We do not accept insurance for midwifery services; however, some mainland insurance companies may reimburse midwifery services.

Midwifery services for out-of-hospital births vary based on a sliding scale, ranging from $2,500 to $5,000.

We recommend that first-time birthing individuals hire a doula. The doula is not included in the out-of-hospital birth services. MAM has dedicated doulas available for additional support during pregnancy or postpartum for an extra cost.

The first two postpartum appointments will be in homes around the metropolitan area (San Juan and nearby), while the other appointments up to twelve weeks postpartum,  will take place at our clinic in San Juan.

Once you are part of our program, you will have the midwives’  emergency numbers for any questions outside of office hours.

Obstetrical Care

Yes, you must be a MAM participant in the midwifery program to receive obstetrical care.

The OB accepts both private and public insurance, with some exceptions.

Pediatric Support

Yes, we work closely with a pediatrician who conducts well-baby checks at MAM  after the baby is born. We recommend scheduling a prenatal visit with the pediatrician to discuss your wishes regarding the birth.

Yes, MAM believes that training the new generation of healthcare providers is essential to maintaining our model of care and exposing all health professionals to holistic practices. Currently, MAM is a clinical site for the Midwifery Program at Southwest Wisconsin Technical College and for the Medical Science Campus of the University of Puerto Rico. Additionally, we offer courses throughout the year to educate doulas, midwives, nurses, and physicians in the holistic model of care. We frequently hold conferences and bring in nationwide speakers to share updated information with the community, stakeholders, educators, and birth workers.
